Withrow’s Roland West, Denny Duermit and Tom Chambers in CPS Hall of Fame

Three Withrow Tigers—athletes Roland West ’62 and Denny Duermit ’69 and coach Tom Chambers are members of the ninth class inducted in April into the CPS Athletic Hall of Fame. Induction is based solely on High School athletic accomplishments in sports officially recognized by the Ohio State Athletic Association.

Roland West, photo left, earned six varsity letters (three in track, two in basketball, and one in cross-country). The Tigers’ basketball record for his two years was 41-7 with one PHSL Championship and two Sectional and District Championships. In 1962 he earned All-City First Team and State Honorable Mention recognition. He earned a full ride basketball scholarship to the University of

Cincinnati and had an outstanding college career, culminating in being drafted by the NBA Baltimore Bullets. He went on to have a successful management consulting career.

Denny Duermit, photo right, had two outstanding basketball years leading the team in scoring (20.9) in 1969, earning PHSL First Team selection both years and PHSL Player of the Year in 1969. He also earned First Team All-City and State Honorable Mention recognition that year and received a full ride basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. He entered the education field and spent 27 years as a teacher and 14 successful years as Head Boys Basketball coach (175-140 record and five League Championships) at Walnut Hills.

Tom Chambers, photo left, was the Withrow Baseball coach for 38 years (1966-1999 and 2005-2008) and Cross-Country coach from 1967-1971. His overall baseball record is 573-445-1 (.563) with nine League Championships and only 11 losing seasons. At least 350 Tigers went on to play Division 1 base-ball and three went on to play Major League baseball (Ron Oester ’74, Tony Scott, and Shannon Penn ’87).

The eleven other 2018 inductees are Robert Fagin (Western Hills ’46—Swimming); Pat Groeniger (Western Hills ’46— Cross Country, Track & Field); Denny Dase (Central Vocational ’59—Football, Track & Field); Al Lanier (Hughes ’69—Track & Field); Dwayne Berry (Aiken ’75—Football, Basketball); Jenny Johnston (Walnut Hills ’82—Swimming); Chip Jones (Woodward ’88—Basketball); Glynn Johnson (Walnut Hills ’96—Football, Track & Field); Mary Wineberg (Walnut Hills ’98—Track & Field); Andre Frazier (Hughes ’00—Football, Basketball); and Coach John Young (Aiken ’74-’85—Football).
