Bring your friends and family to “Withrow Sounds Again”…a return of a musical variety show to Withrow. This year’s show will feature a blend of student and nonstudent performers who will entertain you with classics from the past as well as songs from the Broadway smash hit “Hamilton.” Remember the opening “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and Put On a Happy Face” with full orchestra, chorus and dancers. How about the closing “May The Good Lord Bless and Keep You” and “That’s Entertainment”. In between will be selections from the Sounds from prior shows “Shaft”, “Aquarius” and songs by Bruno Mars. And there’s more: Latin music, Gospel music, Sounds of Love Through the Years, Jazz Favorites and everyone’s favorite piano performance – Gerhwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. You’ll also enjoy student skits, dancers, soloists.
Music will be performed by a 20+ piece orchestra of mostly volunteer musicians, both alumni and Friends of Withrow, along with student musicians from Withrow’s Band and String Program. Choral Music will be performed by an alumni choir also augmented by students. Dancers will be from the Tigerettes dance team, and students will be performing the skits. Kathy Wade ’73 will perform on Thursday and Saturday nights. Withrow alumni and Friends of Withrow in the orchestra include trumpeters Bill Tipkemper ’64, Zachery Riggins ’72, Darryl Issacs ’72, Michael Wade, Band Director. Others include Dennis Farmer ’77-trombone, Bruce Knapp-tuba Anne Hazelbaker-piano and retired teacher Gail Harmeling-violin.
The prolific tradition of musical variety shows ran from 1930 to 1965 under the baton of George ‘Smittie’ Smith. Click HERE for a brief history of The Minstrels. The tradition continued from 1966 to 1984 as the “Sounds of Withrow” under the direction of James W. Parke, Carolyn Mitchell, Jerome Johnson and others. Click HERE for a brief history of the Sounds of Withrow. Except for attempts in the 1990’s and early millennial years to revive a musical show, music and theater have been largely absent from Withrow’s auditorium for over 35 years.
This year’s show is a historic event capping a monumental effort by alumni and others to re-introduce a music and theater program to Withrow and make the auditorium performance ready. All proceeds will help restore music and theater to Withrow. You can further help the program by purchasing Centennial and Withrow Sounds Again apparel both online at website Gift Mall and in the main hall at Withrow, on Fridays, from 11am till 3pm.
Tickets will also be sold in Withrow’s main hall every Tuesday and Friday from 11 am – 1 pm, every Thursday evening from 5 pm – 8 pm and on Saturday April 27th from Noon – 4 pm in the Gym lobby. To select reserved seating, tickets purchased at Withrow will be purchased through Eventbrite and will include a $2.85 processing fee per ticket. If selecting a reserved seat is not important, a ticket may be purchased at Withrow without the $2.85 processing fee; and a reserved seat will be automatically assigned.
