Withrow’s Centennial Weekend Celebration and More

Graduation good news. 85% of Withrow’s Senior Class graduated this May and received over $4.7 million in scholarship money. A special congratulations to Salutatorian Isaiah Houston and Valedictorian Kristian Young.  Read the introductions of Isaiah Houston and Kristian Young during the graduation ceremony.

We are now half way through Withrow’s exciting and historic Centennial Year and more is being planned. There’s been a renewed interest in Withrow History and Alumni. Bob Linnenberg ‘63, Christy McTigue Backley ‘66, Dave Blocksom ‘68, Dennis Goens ‘69 and others have done a lot of research over the last year to put together two interesting documents. First is a listing of 100 years of Withrow facts. The second is a listing of Notable Withrow Alumni.

Withrow Super Alums Step Up

The Board of Trustees has been planning several projects and events to celebrate Withrow’s Centennial during 2019. Please join us for the Withrow Sounds Again in May and a Withrow Centennial Weekend in September. In addition to getting alumni back to campus, getting our students involved in the celebration, and enhancing the buildings and grounds for the celebration, we would be remiss if we didn’t use this opportunity for a Centennial fund raising campaign.

50 Years of Withrow History in Annuals

From the onset, the stated objective of the Annual has been “to make a true picture of school life” at Withrow. Anxiously awaited every spring, the yearbook has been a mirror of the times, and occasionally the troubles, of life in Cincinnati’s largest high school.

The first East High School annual was published by the senior class in 1920. The literary editor that year was Dorothy Pearce Atkins. She returned to Withrow in 1926 as an English teacher and remained until her retirement in 1961. Named The Tiger by the class of 1922, the annual remained so named as long as the school was called East High. Jokes and baby pictures of seniors, popular in the 1920s, were dropped from later annuals. The sixth annual in 1925 was the “first” Withrow High School annual.
